About the painting. This beautiful trinket box is decorated with the print of a painting, done by one of the greatest Russian painters and, unquestionably, the very best Russian sea landscape painter, Ivan Aivazovsky in 1892. The work depicts a famous act of heroism, committed by a Russian brig Mercury during the Russian-Turkish War of 1828-1829. The lone Russian brig was pursued by 10 Turkish ships, two of which were able to catch up to Mercury near the Straight of Bosphorus. In the battle that ensued, a single 20-gun Russian brig was engaged by two Turkish ships, each several times larger than Mercury - the brig's 20 guns stood against 110 guns of Selimie and 74 guns of Real-Bei. Damaging the Turkish ships to the point, at which neither was able to stay in pursuit of the brig, Mercury escaped the Turks. For this extraordinary act of valor, Mercury was awarded the flag of St. George the Victorious, one of only two ships to ever receive this honor (the second ship being Azov, a ship of the line, for unprecedented valor during the Battle of Navarino in 1827, two years before Mercury). Not a single ship since has been awarded the flag of St. George the Victorious.
