A kokoshnik is an important part of the Russian national women's costume. The word itself is derived from the archaic Slavic word "kokosh," meaning hen.   Apparently, this high hoop on the head reminded them of a chicken comb. A kokoshnik is an open tiara that was worn by girls before marriage. Until 1920s, this headdress, embroidered with pearls, was a traditional part of the Russian bridal outfit. Even today, kokoshnik headdresses make women look especially young, romantic, and a little flirtatious.
