St. Matrona the Wonderworker of Moscow (born Matrona Dmitrievna Nikonova 1881 - May 2, 1952) is a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church who had the gift of spiritual vision and the gift of healing from early childhood. While still a child, Matrona was noticed in the crowd by St. John of Kronstadt who, having talked to her, exclaimed: "Here is my successor, the eighth pillar of Russia." After her dead in 1952, St. Matrona's grave became the site of pilgrimage for countless faithful for many decades, until she was canonized on May 2, 1999 - forty seven years after her death.
In Russia, it is customary to exchange beautifully designed Easter eggs with one another and what better way to do this than to give this stunning wooden icon egg?
