The Musketeers were a bodyguard unit of the French Royal Household from 1622 to 1775. The basic parts of a Musketeer outfit were the Cavalier hat with a plume, pants, boots, and Musketeer tabard which is a short azure cloak "a la Cossack" with silver braiding and white crosses sewn on the front, back and sides, the cross was made from velvet, had golden royal lilies at the ends and scarlet shamrocks in the center. Musketeers rode gray horses (or rather white or dapple-gray), that is why they got the nickname "gray musketeers". Musketeers’ equipment along with a horse and a musket with bi-pod included a sword, a broadsword (for mounted action), a pair of pistols, a daga (dagger for the left hand) and a buff sling with rounds attached to it, a tinderbox, a pouch for bullets and wicks. A musket was issued from the treasury, but a musketeer had to acquire other weapons and equipment, as well as a horse and a servant at his own expense. The Musketeers of the Guard were the guards outside the Louvre, and they accompanied the King on his trips and walks, riding on horseback in twos in front of other guards; they also accompanied the king in the campaigns. We know the Musketeers from the famous novel by Alexander Dumas. D'Artagnan, who carefully and strictly commanded a company, turned it into a kind of military school; nobles entered the school at her age of 16-17, and after 3-4 years of service could get the rank of lieutenant or captain of the army. Those who preferred to stay in the unit were the privileged group of veterans, which included 52 oldest Musketeers. The Royal Musketeers became famous all over Europe and were the subject of imitation for other rulers, many young noblemen from abroad strove to undergo training in this famous unit.
