Saint George the Martyr

Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Christian Church. He is known as the protector of warriors and a helper in labor, and people of all ages — men, women, and children — turn to him for guidance. Saint George the Victorious aids all who believe that their prayers will be heard and fulfilled.

This icon depicts the saint’s most famous miracle: saving a princess from the dragon to whom she was to be sacrificed. Symbolically, the princess represents the human soul, and the dragon represents the devil seeking to destroy it. Saint George, the heavenly protector, descends from the Heavens to save the soul from destruction.
