Our Lady of Kazan, also called Theotokos of Kazan, was a holy icon of the highest stature within the Russian Orthodox Church, representing the Virgin Mary as the protector and patroness of the city of Kazan. Our Lady of Kazan is honored as the guardian and patroness of the Russian city, Kazan, and of all Russia. This iconic image was originally said to have been discovered in 1579 after a Marian apparition. Since then, copies of this Virgin Mary icon have been displayed in cathedrals all over Russian and the world.
