It is believed that the icon of Our Lady of Smolensk was painted by Evangelist Luke. This icon was used by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos to bless the marriage between his daughter, Anastasia, and Vsevolod I, the future Prince of Kiev, and all of Russia, the son of Kiev's Yaroslav the Wise, in 1046. From that point on, the icon became holy family relic of the Russian princes and the symbol of the continuity of their rightful succession on the Russian throne.
In Russia, it is customary to exchange beautifully designed Easter eggs with one another and what better way to do this than to give this stunning wooden icon egg?
