Icon eggs are a great way to both stay in touch with spirituality and add a truly unique touch to home décor. One of the best-known, as well as most venerated Orthodox icons, the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir is said to have been painted by Evangelist Luke, using a board from the table at which Christ are together with Mary and Joseph. The icon remained in Constantinople until 1131, when it was sent to Vyshgorod to Prince Mstislav of Russia. Twenty-four years later, the icon was moved to the then new capital of Russia, Vladimir. Finally, in 1395, Our Lady of Vladimir icon was moved to Moscow, where it remains to this day. It is said that the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir (also known as Theotokos of Vladimir) has saved Russia from invaders, the last time being in December 1941. It is alleged that when the German army was in the sight of Moscow, preparing for the final push to take the city, Joseph Stalin ordered the icon to be flown in an airplane several times over Moscow. The Germans never did take Moscow…
