Grandfather Frost is the main character on Russian New Year celebrations. He is the East-Slavic counterpart to the West's Santa Claus. Grandfather Frost's original role in the Slavic mythology was that of the personification of the winter cold, which gradually changed to his role as a Christmas character, and later, during the atheist Soviet times, to the role of a character strictly for the New Year.
