Soviet military units that distinguished themselves in battle and service were awarded the title of Guards Unit starting in 1942. Members of the Russian Armed Forces have been wearing versions of this Soviet Guards pin since 1943. These badges were personally handed to each soldier before a unit formation of military personnel on a ship in a solemn atmosphere. Soviet Guards pins could only be worn during service in honorable Red Army or Red Fleet Guards Units.
