The Tale of the Golden Cockerel is the last fairy tale in verse by Alexander Pushkin. Pushkin wrote the tale in 1834 and it was first published in literary magazine "Biblioteka dlya chteniya" in 1835. The tale is based on the short story Legend of the Arabian Astrologer from the Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving. Somewhere, in a thrice-nine kingdom, in a thrice-ten state, lived the great Tsar Dadon. In his youth he had been bold and ruthless, and waged terrible wars against the rulers of neighboring kingdoms -- but in his old age he wanted to rest from war, and build a peaceful life...
