On April 12th, 1961 Yuriy Gagarin became the first man to fly into open space. Carrier-rocket Vostok with the attached spaceship Vostok carrying Gagarin was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. After 108 minutes in space Yuriy Gagarin successfully landed in the Saratov region, near the town of Engels. In 1962, the day of Gagarin's flight, April 12th, was declared a national holiday - Cosmonautics Day.
