Tiger Cubs Lacquer Box
Just a glance at this oval-shaped box with a picture of charming tiger cubs will lift your spirits! It is done in the Fedoskino style, a traditional type of miniature oil painting on papier-mache, which emerged at the end of the 18th century in Fedoskino, a village near Moscow. From early on, Fedoskino artists worked with transparent glaze paints, which shine in vivid contrast to glimmering black lacquered backgrounds. They perfected their technique throughout several generations, until craftspeople were able to add their paintings to different wares. Their efforts and the gorgeous, shimmering results have made Fedoskino miniatures popular around the world.
